But with mergers, takeovers, and acquisitions, it’s tough to know which dollars truly float to the top and stay within our borders. To pass the test in this quiz, a company must be truly Canadian owned, not just having manufacturing or retail outlets within Canada. We think you’ll be surprised at some of the results.

#1. Let’s start with an easy one. Pick one of these French fry products that is from a Canadian company?

Both McCain and Cavendish are Canadian companies. Alexia is owned by ConAgra Brands, Inc., headquartered in Chicago. Ore-Ida is a brand owned by Heinz, based in Pittsburgh. But it’s ok to thank them for the Tater Tots!

#2. Which of these home improvement brands is a Canadian company?

Home Hardware is the right answer. Home Depot is an Atlanta-based company. Lowe’s is based in North Carolina. In May, 2016, Lowe’s acquired Quebec-based Rona. Rona removed signs that read “Truly Canadian” and “Proudly Canadian” in 2019 due to consumer and advertising standards pressure.

#3. Let’s get to the beef! Pick a Canadian-owned burger joint.

Both Harvey’s and A&W are Canadian. Harvey’s is straight-up Canuck, based in Vaughan, Ontario. A&W is a trickier one. Originally part of the U.S.-based A&W Restaurants chain, the Canadian operation was bought by its management in 1995. It no longer has a corporate connection to A&W outside of Canada, and operates out of Vancouver.

#4. Let’s wash that burger down with a beer. Which familiar brew is from a Canadian company?

Moosehead is Canada’s oldest independent brewery, located in Saint John, New Brunswick. Labatt Brewing Company was founded in London, Ontario, but later sold to a Belgian brewer and then merged into American brewer Anheuser-Busch. Similarly, Keith’s was sold to Labatt and then merged into Anheuser. In 2005, Molson Brewery merged with the Coors company to become Molson Coors, headquartered in Chicago.

#5. Let’s get to the harder stuff. Which whiskey is made by a Canadian owned company?

Sadly, “Canadian” rye is often produced in Canada but owned by foreign companies. Kinsip’s rye is produced independently by in Ontario’s Prince Edward County. Canadian Club is produced by Beam Suntory, an American company which is a subsidiary of Suntory Holdings in Japan. Crown Royal is created in Canada, but owned by Diageo PLC, a British beverage company headquartered in London, England. Forty Creek is distilled in Grimsby, Ontario, but owned by Italian beverage company Campari Group.

#6. All boozed up? Time for a coffee. Which brew is produced by a Canadian owned company?

Second Cup is the only Canadian company. Dunkin’ Donuts is an American chain based in Massachusetts. Tim Horton’s of course has Canadian roots but was purchased by Burger King in 2014. The chain is now a subsidiary of a Canadian holding company that is majority-owned by Brazilian investment firm 3G Capital. Starbucks is a US-company based in Seattle.

Shoppers Drug Mart is Canadian, headquartered in Toronto. In 2014 it was acquired by Loblaws (so still Canadian). Rexall, IDA and Guardian are owned by McKesson Corporation out of Irving, Texas.

#8. Alright, yes, we’re wading into the messy ketchup debate here. That debate so far has been on where tomatoes are sourced from and where manufacturing takes place. But let’s see if you can pick one of these producers that is a Canadian company.

President’s Choice is owned by Loblaw’s and Primo is owned by Sun-Brite Foods, both Canadian companies. Make no mistake, French’s is owned by US-based McCormick & Company. Heinz is based in Pittsburgh. While both companies have made efforts to use Candian tomatoes in Canadian manufacturing facilities, the parent companies are south of the border.

#9. What’s sweeter than ketchup? Ice cream! Which of these brands is owned by a Canadian company?

Chapman’s is a Canadian company, founded in 1973 and based in Markdale, Ontario. Parlour is made by Swiss multinational, Nestle. Breyers (and Ben & Jerry’s) are owned by British conglomerate Unilever. Häagen-Dazs, despite the umlaut, is American and based in Minnesota.

#10. Let’s stick with dairy. Which of these yogourt products is produced by a Canadian firm?

Liberte is Canadian owned, based in Longueuil, Quebec. Danone is a French multinational based in Paris, and also the owner of the Oikos brand. Yoplait is also French, with a controlling interest from US-based General Mills.

#11. Sweeter still? You’re insatiable. Alright, which of these confections is from a Canadian company?

Jos. Louis is made by Vachon, a brand owned by Canada Bread Company, Ltd. based in Toronto. If you guessed Twinkies, Krispy-Kreme or Pop-Tarts, you’re wrong like a Ding-Dong. Twinkies are made by Hostess Brands based in Kansas. Krispy-Kreme is from North Carolina, and Pop-tarts are made by Kellog’s which is based in Michigan.

#12. Ok, last one because I’ve gotta go. Pick one of these toilet paper brands made by a Canadian company?

Since 1957, Cascades is Canadian owned, and based in Kingsley Falls, Quebec and Kruger, Inc. in Montreal is the manufacturer of Cashmere. Charmin is made by Proctor & Gamble, based in Cincinnati. Cottonelle is owned by Kimberly-Clark out of Wisconsin.
