It’s My Treat

Got trick or treating on the mind this week? Do yourself a favour: buy the minimal amount of Halloween candy possible so you don’t get stuck with a half-full box of processed, plastic-tasting packets of sugary candy or mini chocolate bars. If you’re really looking for a treat, I’ve got five amazing options for you highlighted below that are way, way better – and worth the calories.

Nadege MacaronsNadège Patisserie Macaron Travel Boxes – From $26.50
Toronto-based Nadège Patisserie has been championed for it’s perfectly light and flaky, perfectly French macarons (aka, one of my favourite treats on the planet!) And for good reason, given owner Nadège Nourian is a fourth-generation pastry chef out of France that’s worked in Michelin Star-rated restaurants alongside some of the best pasty chefs in the world. While many of the Patisserie’s items must be picked up in-store, a selection of their treats are available for nationwide shipping, meaning yes, you can munch on some Parisian treats right from the comfort of your own home, wherever it may be. Bon appetit!

NatureBoxNatureBox Canada Subscription – $24.95 / month (including shipping)
Want to feel good about what you’re munching on? NatureBox is a nutritionist-approved subscription service that delivers five healthy treats right to your doorstep each and every month. The service started in the U.S. but has recently expanded up north and is currently offering a ‘Beta’ version of their subscriptions. Normally you get to tailor what’s in your box; for the time being, they select what five treats you get – like October’s mix, which included Baked Peppery Potato Sticks and Honey Dijon Pretzels. Yum! A perfect choice for that friend that’s always looking for a healthier alternative to a bag of chips.

monkeybutterMonkey Butter – $10 each
How’s this for a fun, kid-friendly food gift? Monkey Butter is a Canadian peanut butter brand that focuses on natural ingredients and offers gluten-free and vegan-friendly options. Each of their creamy dreamy blends has a unique flavour spin – from classics like ‘Honey’ to more unexpected fare like ‘White Chocolate Pretzel’ or ‘Dark Chocolate Cherry’. It works wonderfully as a stocking stuffer for any PB fiends, but also makes for a quirky hostess gift the next time you’re headed over to a PB-loving pal’s place for a girls (or guys) night.

Crave CupcakesCrave Cupcakes – $3.25 each
Now this one’s a little unfair, unless you happen to live in Edmonton, Calgary or Saskatoon – but I couldn’t not include it. I’ve eaten a lot of cupcakes in my life, but none have been as top-to-bottom amazing as those found at Crave. Their cakes are utterly moist and flavourful, their frostings are just the right amount of fluffy, their varieties are the perfect amount of diverse so that every one is perfected. While their cupcakes make my heart sing, virtually everything I’ve tried (including whoopie pies, cakes, and a s’mores tart) has tickled my tastebuds. They also offer gluten-free cupcakes, which, according to my brother-in-law, are the only baked goods he’s ever had that taste like ‘regular’ baked goods. Here’s what’s extra great! They deliver – so if you can’t make your way to their one of their bakeries in person but you at least live in one of their cities, well, you’re in luck: your cravings can literally be satiated by the baking wizards at Crave.

Canada Sweet Shop Gift BoxCanada Sweet Shop Elegant Gift Box – $19.99 @ Target, PharmaSave, Save On Foods & Overwaitea
Bestill my sugar-craving heart. Sweet (aka Canada Sweet Shop) is an ah-mazing, Calgary-based candy business that specializes in toffees and brittles that are, quite frankly, little bites of heaven. Here’s the thing. I’m not much of a brittle person – I usually find it sickly sweet. But one bite into creator Dannah’s Classic Peanut Brittle was a total dessert revelation. It tasted airy, crispy, fluffy, and JUST the right amount of sweet. I’ve never had anything like it. And what’s even crazier (to you guys perhaps) is that most of Sweet’s products are vegan and / or gluten-free, making this a universally appealing line-up of treats that includes such scrumptious flavours as Cinnamon Almond Brittle and Smokey Bacon Peanut Brittle (as well as an equally amazing blend of salty and sweet in their Olde English Toffee). Sweet products are available through the Sweet website and are sold locally at venues like the Calgary Farmer’s Market – but this holiday season they’ve also got national coverage, with their amazingly tasty and perfectly hostess-gift priced Elegant Gift Box, which features two bars of Olde English Toffee and two bars of Peanut Brittle – both of which will change your sweet tooth for life. Gah, I’m drooling just thinking about it. Seriously, visit your Target / pharmacy / grocery store that carries the boxes, stock up, and you will be set for gifting this holiday season!

Oh, and of course, I’ve got a yum-yum-yummy Elegant Gift Box to gift to one of you lucky, lovely readers. Here’s how to enter for your shot at winning:

1) Tell me in the comments below by November 12, two things. First, which flavour of treat from Sweet would you most love to sample first? And second, which of these tasty gift ideas has got your sweet tooth-a-tingling?

2) Entries are limited to one per person / per email address / per household (or more if you score bonus entries). A random draw will be conducted on or around November 13, 2014 to select the winner(s), who will have 48 hours to respond before another winner is chosen in their place.

3) Entries are limited to Canadians that have reached the age of majority in their province. Quebec is not eligible for this promotion.

4) Bonus Entry: Like Sweet on Facebook and leave a comment as to why you’re so keen on sampling their treats. Link back to your comment below in a separate comment (you can learn how to do so here).
