Fun & Games

With just a few weeks back before ‘life as we know it’ resumes – i.e. the cold weather sets in and the kids head back to school – I thought it’d be fun to round up some easy ways to have some family fun and enjoy the weather this August.

Coleman Ladder BallColeman Ladder Ball – $89.99 @ Canadian Tire
This head-to-head sport involves tossing bolos onto rungs for points – sort of like bocce ball but in the air. The good news is you can play it virtually everywhere (especially since this kit includes a bag for easy transport) – whether the beach or your backyard. With two wooden ladders and matching sets of bolos, this is an old fashioned way to have a good ol’ time with the whole family.

cacoonCacoon – From $340
The conceit behind these colourful and whimsical outdoor seating spaces is to essentially function as a hanging hammock. The ‘single’ can hold a couple of kids or one adult comfortably, while the ‘double’ (pricier at $500) hosts two adults. These are a great pick if whoever you’re buying for has one sturdy tree in their yard or at the lake, but maybe doesn’t have two (which you’d require to string up a hammock). Comfortable and cozy, pick up some magazines or books for your giftee to wile their remaining summer days away.

Airhead Hot Dog 3-Person Towable FloatieAirhead Hot Dog 3-Person Towable Inflatable – $269.99 @ Bed, Bath & Beyond
Up to three people can fit comfortably in this sturdy inflatable floatie. What you do from there is up to you. It can be hooked up to a boat for a thrilling tow ride, or you can give the passengers some paddles and use it as a pseudo-canoe. Or simply drift about and enjoy the rays on your face.

Gibbon SlacklineGibbon Slackline – $76 @ MEC
For the daredevils and balance maestros comes slacklining – a unique way to work out those muscles while channeling your inner tightrope walker. This reputable brand is known for having a wide webbing, making it easier for newbie slackliners to get the ‘hang’ of things, and expert toe jammers to show off their crazy skills. At 15 meters long, it’s easy to set up in anyone’s backyard too.

Sureshot Disc GameSureshot Disc Game – $38.99 @ Costco
Start up a friendly family competition with this carnival-inspired Frisbee game. Including a plastic and vinyl frame plus two discs, the aim is simple: get the disc into one of the four slots for points. Whatever parameters you want to set from there to make it extra fun is up to you – from taking a drink everytime you miss or a classic game of D-O-N-K-E-Y.

Trainor Sports 14 trampolineTrainor Sports 14′ Trampoline & Enclosure Combo – $336 @ Walmart
Get the kids to burn off that excess energy with this super-sized trampoline, complete with a safety enclousre to ensure no one tumbles off mid-backflip. While I wouldn’t necessarily represent the adults take a go on this one, you can always bring in a tumbler of wine and some packaged eats for a lazy night under the stars.

Coleman Washer TossColeman, who I kicked off this post with, actually has a pretty cool range of lawn games this year, including croquet, bocce ball, bolo toss, and what I’m excited to give away – the washer toss game featured above, retailing at $54.99.
