Year One Anniversary: Paper

As many of you know, I’m getting married soon-ish. My fiance and I have talked a bit about anniversaries, as happy, optimistic couples are wont to, and we decided we’re going to pick up a bottle of wine during our honeymoon and either crack it the following year, or save it for a future occasion. It also got me thinking to the traditional anniversary gifts that exist out there. How or where they started, I don’t know, but I thought it would be fun to explore gifting options for each of the years. Traditionally speaking, Year One was all about paper products – like the five fab ideas I’ve featured below. Although there is a marginal bit of overlap between each of these sources, I felt like they all had their unique flair and flavour that made them fully worthy of being featured.

Silhouette ArtLe Papier Studio – $3.95+
Why not put yourselves into your paper products – literally? Le Papier Studio’s specialty is all thing silhouette; from beaded necklaces and tote bags through to a range of paper products including prints, notecards, stationery and more. Send in a snap of you and your spouse from your special day or otherwise and they’ll use your actual silhouettes in your custom product. Note that the process does take time so ensure you plan ahead to gift your sweetheart with something awesome like this!

WH HostessWH Hostess Stationery – $8+
If your wife (or flamboyant husband, I suppose) has a flair for design and a packed social calendar, she’ll love this line of peppy printed stationery that is completely customizable and mix-and-matchable for pieces that simply scream personality. From notepads to notecards to monogrammed stationery, you can easily outfit her desk for all of those thank you cards and invites she’s constantly scribbling. As a hint, don’t just buy one piece – imagine opening a box of these easily coordinated items for a real ‘wow’ moment.

Paper CoteriePaper Coterie Journals – $18
If your mate is an introspective type that likes to jot down their thoughts, these customized photo journals will ensure you’re on their mind. With dozens of customizable styles, sneak a hi-res photo from your wedding day to Paper Coterie for a one-of-a-kind keepsake that’ll instantly have her going ‘awww’. Paper Coterie, for the record, is all about customizable photo art gifts, so you can even purchase canvas art or calendars for other special occasions.

Knock KnockKNOCK KNOCK – $4.50+
You’ve probably encountered something from KNOCK KNOCK already – their witty office-oriented paper products can be found at many a Canadian gift shop (including Indigo, for national access). If you and your partner don’t take things too seriously when it comes to anniversaries, consider picking up a couple of their fun paper products – personally I love the ‘For Lovers Vouchers’ as a fun spin on the ‘paper theme’ – sure it’s paper, but it’s really so much more, right?

Besotted BrandBesotted Brand – $8.50+
How’s this for a fun twist on the ‘Paper’ theme? Besotted Brand specializes in customized monogram stamps – meaning you can transform virtually any type of paper into a custom piece. Get one with both of your first name initials, or commemorate your new joint last name with a single initial and a cute Est. Year notation. Stamp your correspondence, Christmas cards, or love notes to one another. Of course, if you want to incorporate some actual ‘paper’, you can look into a bespoke set of stationery, a beautiful, crisp set of notecards, or some classic labels to keep track of his & hers from the bathroom to the kitchen.

In celebration of all things paper, Besotted Brand has teamed up with me to present a lucky reader with a Custom Monogram Handled Stamp + Imported Deckles Edge Note Cards. Here’s how to enter:

The most couple-y gift I’ve ever given was a set of crystal Tiffany champagne flutes for a 25th anniversary present for my aunt & uncle (Acutally, it’s not as expensive as you’d think and the high impact of the robin blue box and bag is worth half the price, hahaha!)

The gift would’ve been more personal if I knew to throw in a set of colour-coordinating stationary, like this:

  32. Angela N says:

My best anniversary gift was a hand-made booklet of coupons for my spouse on our first anniversary. Money was very tight so, instead of spending money on a gift, I made him a booklet of coupons for things like breakfast in bed, fancy home-cooked meal, movie of his choice, back and foot massages, no chores for a day, etc. He absolutely loved the coupons (so much so that they’ve shown up on his Christmas and birthday wish lists) and they also fit the first anniversary tradition of a paper gift. It would have been great to have the personalized monogram stamp to put on the coupons.

  33. Julia says:

Well, to be totally honest, the best anniversay gift I ever got was this past year, when we actually celebrated our anniversary. It’s not that there was a huge gift involved or anything, it’s just that we we out for a nice dinner. So what’s the big deal? Well, despite being together for many years, we’d never actually celebrated an anniversary….every year, he said he would plan/do something, and never did. This caused a lot of hurt and anger, and so I was relieved/happy when we actually FINALLY celebrated it.

I think the Besotted Brand would indeed fit the bill!

  34. talah says:

i love personalised gifts so this prize is great the best thing ive recieved was an album put together of all those random pics of me through the years

  35. Alison K says:

The most couple-y gift I’ve ever given would have to be a framed picture of the wedding couple, along with a nice gift card. I think the “Paper Coterie Journals – $18” would fit the bill especially if it was part of a gift basket.

I crossed stitched a modern looking picture with lots of flowers & the couple’s wedding date & gave it to them for their first anniversary. They loved it & 15 years later it’s still prominently displayed in their house.
