At The Beauty Counter
Although I love indulging in high-end goodies and luxe treats as much as the next girl, I also fully get distracted by the colourful displays of drugstore cosmetics, and often pocket an item or two (after paying, obvi) even if I’m just supposed to be picking up a prescription or a last-minute grocery item. With that in mind, I thought I’d quickly highlight my five favourite beauty & body care finds – all of which you can score for under $15. If that’s not true love, I don’t know what is….
Maybelline Colour Tattoo Metal Collection – $8.99 each
I believe the Colour Tattoo line originally launched in Spring 2012, but it’s their newfound metallic line that really caught my eye. Delivering 24-hour, smudge-free wear, this creamy gel shadow is designed to give you a high-impact, long-wearing look. If you’re a little shy of the bold, bright fashionista look, start the way I did, with the champagne shimmer Barely Branded, which works great as a highlighter under your brows, on your cheeks, and at the inner corner of your eye. From there, don’t be surprised if you get hooked and dip into the other shades – from classic silver and gold to rosy pink and cobalt blue. A perfect pick for your adventurous makeup maven pal.
Physicians Formula Happy Booster Blush – $11.95
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Physician’s Formula’s new Happy Booster line boasts both a super cute heart motif, and the promise to actually make you feel as good as you look. How you ask? Well for one, it’s infused with a violet scent, which in aromatherapy lore is said to provide an uplifting feel of joy. For another, all products in the Happy Booster collection have natural plant extracts said to mimic the euphoric feeling you get from endorphins, all while protecting your skin from environmental stress. While the entire collection is pretty darn sweet, I thought I’d highlight this pretty pink blendable blush that provides a touch of shimmer as well. Give it to your sweetheart if she’s going through a rough patch.
Revlon File N Peel – $4.49
Consider this nifty product a nail file with legs. This nifty nail sander comes with six layers of file paper, so whenever one gets dull and chalky, simply peel it off and start on the next layer. Not only is it way smart, it’s also pretty savvy from a price standpoint. If your sister is an at-home manicure kinda gal, she’ll simply flip for this new nail care innovation.
L’Oréal Féria Wild Ombré – $10.99 each
Having shelled out a pretty penny to try a variety of ombre styles on my hair over the last 18 months (gold, pink, and copper have all made an appearance) I was pretty psyched to hear about an at-home kit to channel the same effect. With an easy-to-apply formula and brush, the look makes it possible for anyone with light to medium hair (super dark-haired folks may still be stuck with heading to the salon) to achieve a gentle ombre effect. If you’re unsure about this wildly popular hair trend, I can testify that it instantly lightens up your complexion, freshens up your look without a dramatic root-to-end transformation, and is still completely on-trend. Plus worst-case scenario, all you do is trim off the ends and start anew with your regular crop of hair. As an aside, these products are just hitting the shelves this month, so be patient if you haven’t seen them turn up at your drugstore just yet. For foolproof results, grab a box for your fair-haired friend and do an at-home spa night together!
New York Color Liquid Lipshine – $3.99
These ridiculously glossy, insanely cheap lipshines have been making virtual headlines – they actually trended on Twitter a couple of weeks ago, an impressive feat for a little tube of gloss. Then again, with ten shades and a non-sticky formula that’s guaranteed to turn heads, I can’t really blame the beautysphere for going a little crazy for this newbie product. Stock up on ’em and dole them out to your girlfriends before a girl’s night out, and be prepared to pucker up!
So there you have it, my five recent finds in the drugstore beauty aisles. Sigh, whoever complains about the fact you can purchase beauty goods in seemingly unexpected places better give their head a shake. And with that, I’ve also got a fun giveaway: one lucky reader is going to score the entire Colour Tattoo Metals collection (that would be, all five shimmery shades pictured above). Here’s how to enter:
1) Leave a comment here by February 25th with the bargain beauty buy featured in this post you’d most love to try.
2) Entries are limited to one per person / per email address / per household (or more if you score bonus entries). A random draw will be conducted on or around February 26th to select the winners, who will have 48 hours to respond before another winner is chosen in their place.
3) Entries are limited to Canadians that have reached the age of majority in their province. Quebec is not eligible to participate in this promotion.
4) Bonus Entry: Like Maybelline New York – Canada on Facebook and leave a comment on their wall with what Colour Tattoo Metal shade you’re most excited about trying!

The Revlon File n Peel looks practical – although the tattoo metal color shadows are fun-looking as well. I think I’ll look for both of them next time I’m out!

I like the metallic eyeshadows. The hair dyes look cool, but I’ve recently called it quits on dyes (I was dying my natural blonde hair various shades of red), as it’s a bother and doesn’t last very long (I wash my hair too often). But the ombre effect does look funky.
I’d love to try the Physicians Formula Happy Booster Blush
