CELEBRATING YOUR CHILD’S DIFFERENCES

Every man, woman, and child is different. That’s what makes the world we live in unique and special.

Some people thrive on being in front of large groups of people. Others crave the shadows of backstage or being behind the camera.

Some people have lighter skin, larger noses, brown eyes not blue, birthmarks and different voices.

While many adults understand the need for different personalities and strengths in this world, it can be hard for children to see differences as a good thing. This can lead to bullying in school and not respecting the people around them.

Whatever the differences, celebrating your child’s differences is important, because if we as parents don’t celebrate our child’s differences, neither will they.

So how can we go about celebrating each of our child’s individual differences?

OPEN COMMUNICATION

Keep the door of communication open. Allow your child to talk to you about the things they enjoy doing and the activities they want to explore.

Talk to your child about their skills and talents and what they are good at. If necessary, sit down with your child and try and come up with activities that are just for them – ones that don’t include a sibling.

CELEBRATE THEM ON THEIR SPECIAL DAY

When it comes to the day your child was born, throw a party that reflects them and their interests. If you have twins, try and throw them each a separate birthday party (this can be tricky I know!).

Allow them to help plan out the menu, games, and decorations to make them feel that their interests are important.

READ BOOKS ABOUT DIFFERENCES TOGETHER

Buy some books about differences. Books like We All Have Different Abilities, We All Look Different, and Celebrating Differences.

This will allow you to educate your children and open their eyes to the face that we are all different and how to celebrate those differences.

I think that our parental example of respecting and celebrating the uniqueness of others, including ourselves and our kids, provides a standard for them.
