Holiday Reads: Best Nonfiction Books 2017

And we’re wrapping up my Holiday Reads posts with Nonfiction – possibly the easiest category to book shop in, so long as you know your loved ones’ interests. From political memoirs to sporty insider tales to searing looks at the food industry, this year’s roundup of nonfiction has something for everyone.

What Happened by Hillary Rodham Clinton
Fair warning – at one point while reading this collection of essays by America’s first female Presidental candidate of a major party, I turned to my husband and said “This is the most depressing book.” The sentiment largely stemmed from what a compelling case Hillary makes a year after the election shock of a lifetime, where Donald Trump swept into power (and subsequently began sweeping away the hard work of the previous administration). While it’s easily acknowledged that this shockingly speedy-released tome is capitalizing on timing (Hillary explores on many issues that are still dominating the headlines today, including Russia’s involvement in tampering with the election), it’s actually what makes this oh so compelling. It’s hard to believe how much has happened in a year, and Hillary takes her time in this assortment of essays to highlight what went wrong for her personally and politically, addressing all of the most common attacks on her and her campaign head on, with only minimal lip service. It’s a striking read from start to finish, particularly if you have an interest in some of the areas Hillary reallllly goes deep, such as the kerfuffle around her emails or yes, Russia. A must-have for any ‘nasty women’ supporters or those simply looking for some more perspective on the craziest U.S. election ever.

Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil DeGrasse Tyson – $24.95
If you’re a space nerd (like me!) then you probably loved Cosmos, the revival of all things space hosted by astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson. If you’ve ever wanted to better understand our universe but aren’t keen on putting in a decade or two of studying the cosmos, NDT has got you covered with this pint-sized book. Clocking in at around 200 pages, the book is not only short and sweet, it’s small in shape too, designed to tuck easily into your purse, briefcase, or carry-on for reading snippets on the go. The chapters are designed with the same purpose as well, bringing highfalutin scientific concepts down to earth, as it were, with sparkling clear copy that makes it easy to wrap your head around the crazy mad science DeGrasse Tyson is exploring. It’s a cool book for anyone with a passing interest in space – or those that just want to appear the smartest in the room at the next cocktail party they attend. Oh, and did I mention it also just won one of Goodreads’ Best Books of 2017 awards? Not too shabby!

How We Did It by Karl Subban and Scott Colby
Behind every star athlete there is (generally) a crazy supportive parent that put up the cash, time, and cheers to get their kid to the top. While many stories have been written over the years about sports parents (most recently the controversial figure known as LaVar Ball), Karl Subban’s is a particularly interesting case…he raised three kids to become NHL draft picks. The audience for this memoir-style book is pretty vast then. Some folks might read it because they’re fans of Subban’s hockey-playing offspring, including Nashville Predators’ star (and RW & Co. model) P.K. Subban, one of the more recognizable faces in the game. Others might genuinely be curious about the pseudo-how to aspect of the book, which exists, but not as blatantly as the title suggests. Whatever the case, Karl’s easygoing storytelling manner is handled well by co-author Scott Colby, giving you an insiders look at what it takes to reach the top – even when you’re the one on the sidelines.

Option B by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant
The co-authors of this book are two of the best-known names in the broader category of nonfiction I like to call ‘human interest’ (combining psychology, business, and self-help) – so much so that Sandberg actually made the title of her first book Lean In, part of the lexicon of how we speak in general today. If you didn’t catch the headlines, Sandberg’s husband passed away unexpectedly in an accident a few years ago. Her friend (and Wharton professor) Adam reached out to offer a way out from under all that darkness she was wrapped up in – an actual psychological program if you will. The book documents Sandberg’s journey through Grant’s steps, as well as his research that backs up what he’s recommended. While not the sunniest of nonfiction books to pass onto a loved one this holiday season, it’s one that might be necessary. If a friend has gone through a tough year or is anxious about something on the horizon, this sleek and smart tome might be the guiding light to bring them back to their former, happy selves.

The Wolf by Nate Blakeslee
I am a big fan of narrative nonfiction. If you’ve never read a book in this style, it basically removes the author from the equation and tells the story in a fictional prose style – but you know, it’s all true (perhaps just enhanced through the lens of the writer). While narrative nonfiction isn’t new, applying it to the viewpoint of a wolf in America’s wild is. Such is the story of O-Six, a third genreation alpha female Yellowstone Park wolf that was beloved on social media and by wolf watchers in the area. The book largely follows O-Six and her interactions with other wolves (and other elements of nature), giving you a breathtaking look at this wild creature and its day-to-day life (seriously author Nate Blakeslee must have been in awe of documenting this!) The other half gives you a mix of historical insight into the wolf population in Yellowstone (imported via Canada, for the record), as well as the future of wolves in America in general, including their relationship to ranching operations. This book definitely stands out as a unique nonfiction read, particularly for fans of wolves, nature, and the odd harmony we as humans have with the wild things out there.

We Were Eight Years in Power by Ta-Nehisi Coates
The hype behind this book was actually relentless. I do a fair bit of research to pick the books for these posts, and this one continually popped up again and again, piquing my interest enough to investigate further. America is still reeling from the aftershock of the Donald Trump election, and this is yet another perspective on it – quite a different one than Hillary Clinton’s, it should be noted. The book consists of eight essays written by Coates written for The Atlantic Monthly over the eight-year period Barack Obama was President. What results is a pretty staggering (and devastating) look at America’s decline from the positivity that marked the early years of the Obama administration, through to the increasing culture of hate that sprung up in America. As an outspoken critic of Donald Trump and a political activist, Coates’ voice rings loud and clear, particularly in the politically charged climate below the border. Even though the essays are largely focused on the U.S. and its long struggle with race and equality, the lessons and feelings heralded by Coates will resonate with just about anyone that picks this up.

Unqualified by Anna Faris
Normally around the holidays there is a slate of books that fall into the humour / memoir category, usually with famous comedians at the helm. This year was relatively quiet on that front, with the notable exception of Anna Faris’ debut book, inspired by her popular Podcast of the same name. In both cases, Faris is here to give you some highly unqualified advice – some of it hilarious, some of it gut-wrenchingly applicable, and most of it enjoyable to read about. The left hook, however, that came out of nowhere this summer, was the announcement that Faris and her celeb husband Chris Pratt were splitting up. Considering how much of this book serves as sort of a love letter to him, you’d think it’d be sunk. But in actuality, Faris has come out and made clear she edited very little (ditto to Pratt’s foreword, which makes the briefest of mentions of their separation), leaving this as an interesting time capsule of where she was at when writing the book. While it’s a little bittersweet to read given how much of it ties back to relationship advice, the book is ultimately a likable look at one of Hollywood’s most likable, quirky, down-to-earth stars. Whether you’re buying this for an existing fan or not, they’re sure to be charmed (and the tiniest bit heartbroken) at the advice contained within.

Leonardo Da Vinci by Walter Isaacson
Biograpy writer Walter Isaacson may have sprung to the forefront of the pop culture world for his biography of Steve Jobs in his dying days, but in actuality the scribe’s comfort zone is significant historical figures – Einstein and Ben Franklin were two former subjects pre-Jobs. After dabbling in the modern day world (including a sprawling look at a range of innovators in his last book), Isaacson is back to historical bios, this time honing in on Leonardo Da Vinci. Like all Isaacson novels, the research and depth of insight is impeccable – although it may cause apprehension when first eyeballing this brick-sized tale – giving you a stunning level of insight into one of the world’s most infamous inventors. From the Mona Lisa through to Da Vinci’s odd modern-day impact on Dan Brown’s world with The Da Vinci Code, this vast yet readable book is great for anyone interested in art, history, or the mysterious life of this intriguing figure that looms so large to this day.

The Power of Moments by Chip and Dan Heath
If I know you personally, at some point I have likely given you a Chip and Dan Heath book with the recommendation ‘this book will change your life’. The brothers are the bestselling authors of three previous tomes that fall into that aforementioned ‘human interest’ category of psychology + self-help + business expertise. Ironically enough, me giving you a book and telling you it’ll be a life-changing moment is sort of what the focus is here. Like all of the Heath brothers’ books, the big blue sky concept they’re talking about – why some things become ‘moments’ while others do not – is quickly brought down to earth in a very digestible format. In diving into this book, you’ll learn about the four core types of moments we tend to experience – elevation, insight, connection, and pride – in terms of what causes them and the impacts they have on our life. Where things get really interesting though, is their tactics on how you can create experiences and situations that may lead to these memorable moments – enriching your personal relationships, your career, and even your entire life. So yes, another life-changing read from these groundbreaking authors…and this time they’re showing you the magic behind the curtain of how they do it!

The Case Against Sugar by Gary Taubes
I couldn’t write a nonfiction post without at least one book about our diets and the food we eat! Not to put a damper on your holiday baking (and sampling), but the fact of the matter is, the more we learn about sugar, the more sketchy things become. Sugar’s been identified as a drug, and a highly addictive one at that, that seriously wreaks havoc on our bodies. Taubs, a longtime writer about the food and diet industry, takes a in-depth look at this current nutritional bad guy and just why it’s (truly) so awful. After delving into sugar’s impact on your body, debunking some other nutritional myths often pushed to the forefront to shield sugar, and even looking at the sugar industry as a whole, don’t be surprised if you want to quit all things sweet cold turkey. Taubes however, notes how impossible this really is in our modern eating system, and instead lays some groundwork for how you can, at the very least, diminish sugar’s role in your diet. A perfect choice for anyone thinking of taking the no-sugar plunge in the new year (or at least wanting to moderate their diet a bit more stringently).

No Is Not Enough by Naomi Klein
Rounding things out, I’m diving back into politics one more time – but this time, notably, from a Canadian perspective. The activist-cum-journalist (and author) is one of the world’s most respected voices on a range of topics, and she’s out there banging the drum with the likes of John Oliver on the fact apathy isn’t cutting it if we want to protect our world from some potentially crazy toxic forces (again, we look to the south of the border). Of course, she doesn’t just stop there; Klein shines a blazing spotlight on inequality, commercialism, and other hot button topics that keep on popping up on the news (I can only imagine what this book would have looked like if it were published six months after the #MeToo movement). Despite the grim array of forces Klein hones in on, the book is actually on the whole quite inspiring – and a great choice for any idealists (or couch potatoes, alternatively) that could use a guiding path to shake the world back after your own has been shaken.
