Multi-Culti Kitchen

food-trip-to-colombia

What It Is: A very, very cool subscription box with an eye on the world – yet based right here in Canada! Every two months, Food Trip To packages up about six different products from (or inspired by) a specific country around the globe, such as Finland, Morocco, or Italy, oftentimes importing goods you can’t easily pick up off the shelf here. Along with those products, they include recipes for a multi-course meal (including a beverage), as well as some fun facts about the country, a trivia card, and a playlist you can stream on your computer. The idea? To give you a literal taste of another cultural cuisine in the form of a lavish dinner event.

I recently got to try out the Food Trip to Colombia box (expertly timed given the return of Narcos). Inside was an empanada maker, spices, corn flour, guava paste, a sweet chili sauce, coconut candies, crackers, and these little savoury snack bite things. The first five things there were critical to the recipes I received, whereas the others were moreso just cool little extras. Our menu was a shrimp and avocado dish on top of fried plantain chips, homemade empanadas, a guava-based cake, and a guava and strawberry cocktail. The cards were pretty straightforward to follow (although I wished they were organized into smaller steps – each aspect of the recipe is contained in a large paragraph and it can be hard to ensure you’re hitting every ingredient), and the Colombian playlist was SO much fun to have playing in the background while I made the meal.

Admittedly, it’s a lot of work to DIY. If I were to buy the box for myself or someone else, I’d suggest we make a dinner party event out of it, where maybe you invite some couples over and each of you tackles one card (whether made in advance or prepped together). My mom lent a hand doing the cocktail side of things, but I handled the rest. Regardless, my family – my brother-in-law is partially Colombian that recently visited Colombia, so it was a treat to put my Canadian cooking up to the test – was duly impressed with everything. Upon seeing my empanadas, my dad didn’t believe they were homemade, and every last piece of the meal was delicious! Regrettably I was so busy hosting I forgot to take a photo (other than a sad photo of a lone empanada that’s on Instagram) I loved that the obscure ingredients were all neatly packaged up and the idea of this basically being a dinner party in a box floated my boat for sure.

Who It’s For: Your best friends, to do a bi-monthly dinner party around the globe. Your niece or nephew that loves to get busy in the kitchen, to explore new cuisines. Your mom or dad, to liven up their own dinner parties.

What It Costs: Each box is $39.99 if bought a la carte (which you can do – but they sell out!) However if you do a longer-term subscription you earn some discounts. Subscribing for a year (six boxes, which is the perfect frequency) is $29.90 / box instead, or committing to three boxes is $36 / box.

Where It’s At: You can subscribe to Food Trip To here. Their Food Trip To Morocco, Greece and Colombia boxes are available – or you can wait to see what jetsetting destination they’ll take you to next!
