I’ve talked about gifts for dudes. I’ve done gifts for dad. Today’s gift guide is more of your catch-all. Some of the gifts here would work for guy friends, some for dad, some for your husband, your brother, your uncle, your neighbour, your in-laws, your coworkers, your grandpa, your son – you name it. Call me a realist, but sometimes when I’m watching AMC’s ridiculously popular hit TV show The Walking Dead, I’m often left questioning things like how these people are eating, drinking, or hell, going to the bathroom. If you’re shopping for a zombie fanatic of any sort, then chances are they’ll enjoy this humorous book that touches on the very questions I just asked, in a surprisingly semi-practical sort of way. Illustrated by Kristian Bauthus, this actually is a cookbook and survival handbook for a fabled time in our future, as author Lauren Wilson divulges what’s worth packing, where and how to scavenge for supplies, and how you can mix and match things to make surprisingly tasty meals. With interesting recipe options like ‘Overnight of the Living Dead French Toast’ and ‘Down and Out Sauerkraut’ those who think they’re handy in the kitchen can give the recipes a whirl right now – after all, you can never be too prepared for the impending zombie apocalypse. On a more short-term, practical bend, this is also a quirky gift for the rugged outdoorsman in your life – with minimal supplies and ingredients needed, he can finally eat ‘well’ while enjoying the deepest, darkest, zombie-free corners of the world.
Stubble & ‘Stache Beard Care Starter Kit – $54
Obviously this gift is tailor-made for the facial hair-sporting guy – as the brand’s messaging stipulates, the stuff is game-changing. But to back up a few steps, the story behind this brand is just as extraordinary as the product itself. Apart from selling original TV series and program-related merch (including Hockey Night in Canada), the site also features a ton of cool retro-inspired items, from the Ceeb’s rainbow-influenced psychedelic 60s and 70s logos, to their more rustic bags like this cool ‘Recording Kit’. With a military look and sturdy cotton twill fabrication, this durable bag is a great pick for any college students, travelers, or even those guys looking for a different kind of bag to tote to the office. Recognize that from the front it looks like a tote – but it’s actually got two sturdy straps on the back and a handy water bottle holder on the side, meaning your guy can even use it for a weekend trek in the mountains.

An excellent pick to stuff his stocking, gift to a goofy little brother, or as a stealthy way to skirt around security for those season ticket holders (particularly at outdoor events, like the CFL!) As a heads up, shipping is a bit on the high side for this particular gift (around $20) – but if you consider how much your guy may spend on beers at the arena or stadium, then it’ll totally pay itself off in a use or two!

Old (I mean way old – like Ancient Egyptian old) meets new (I mean way new – like modern man new) in this innovative line of artisanal solid colognes from Alfred Lane. Equal parts dapper and sleek, my love for this cool gift starts with what’s on the outside. The vintage packaging – similar to a miniature sardine tin – has a cool, vintage vibe that’s very of the moment in the world of men’s style. Not only that, it’s hella practical. Your man can slip one of these eraser-sized tins into his gym bag, briefcase, or even his wallet. When he wants to smell extra fresh, he just dabs some of the waxy formula onto his pulse points (your wrist, or behind the ears). I actually got to play around with one of the phones for a few weeks and I was duly impressed by just about everything – its camera, photo editing and ‘Story Maker’ capabilities were a particular highlight.
