On March 15th, 1980 we were married. He was 18 and I was 19, 3 months pregnant and no one to help or guide us. At our wedding including his grandmother were taking bets on how long our marriage would survive. The hotel gave us a room for free as we could not afford one. His father insisted that my husband’s younger sister who lived out of town stay with us in the hotel room as she needed to see the orthodontist in the morning. I was very upset, but my new husband had already said yes to his father, about his sister staying in the room with us on our honeymoon. This was just the beginning of 40 years of hardship, disappointment and tragedy and much grieving. We have had the deaths of my dad and our little girl within 30 days, she was mauled to death by 2 dogs at a friend’s house. Our family home burned to the ground, I had to jump out the second-story window to survive. We also lost our 23-year-old nephew. He was healthy one day and died the next with no clear cause of death. These are just a few things.
I have always dreamt of having my first honeymoon and renewing our vows. I was an ER nurse and my husband a police officer. We both gave so much of our selves and time to the betterment of people and society. Now he is retired and I disabled. We would love to go on that first honeymoon, but I am afraid that it is impossible on a fixed income.
